FINE ART
Unique Oriental style paintings of Australian native birds and animals

WELCOME to my fusion of Eastern and Western art, as I combine elements of both traditions to portray native Australian birds and animals.

I was born and raised in Tasmania, Australia, and in recent years have devoted myself to painting our unique and beautiful wildlife.
To develop expertise in Western art I studied at The Julian Ashton Art School and The Paddington Art School (in Sydney), and the UTAS School of Fine Art (in Hobart).
Oriental Brush Painting requires quite different materials and tecniques. I first discovered these with Master Lin Moli in Sydney (1990), and currently study online with several teachers.
The name on my seal stamp, 陶雅礼 (Tao Ya Li) is the artist name given to me by the revered Chinese brush master Chen Yao-Wen, who restores and makes paint brushes for the National Palace Museum in Taipei.

I use the finest Chinese and Japanese art papers, inks and colours. My style pays respect to the Gongbi (fine-line) and Xiao Xieyi (spontaneous) traditions of Chinese Brush Painting, while inevitably showing the influence of my Western training.

My work is in private collections around the world: Australia, USA, Europe, Great Britain, China, Hong Kong, Bhutan.
